so this probably requires some explaination. The hams got me the His Dark Materials trilogy from christmas, which I read over the course of about a week. I really enjoyed the hell out of them. So i sat down to try to draw something and ended up kind of pissing around, not knowing what to draw, and this ended up coming out - kind of what i saw in my head in The Amber Spyglass, of Will and Lyra in the land of the dead. I was really happy since i managed to reproduce pretty closely how i saw it in my head when reading it.

Hey thanks dude - It's 100% digital, all in photochops. the sky was 3 or 4 layers of this texture i found on the internet, gradients, some layer styles, and just some soild color for the base.

Is there any possibility, any at all, that you could put up some sort of tutorial or more in-depth discussion of how you make these drawings look like...this. Because it's seriously awesome, but I don't know nearly enough about Photoshop to even begin to guess how the nitty-gritty works out.

Nice stuff! I'm plowing through them in the same way... maybe not as fast, as I haven't got to the part you're depicting yet, but yeah - GREAT BOOKS.

i almost regret reading them so fast. now there is no more of them to read. i went to see if i could find Lyra's Oxford which takes place 2 years after teh third book i guess, but it was only like 40 pages or some junk. Boo.

Some of my favorite books! :D I kind of found myself resenting Will, though, as Lyra didn't really feel like the hero as much after he showed up.

Seconding the love for the textures and general drearyness.

i hadn't thought of it that way before, but you are right. will really soaks up a lot of the spotlight, and lyra gets taken down several notches (and spends like half a book knocked out). i liked them both, though. i don;t think will would have been very interesting without her.

really really good.

I can't remember what happened in that book whatsoever even though i read it probably less than a year ago. I really only remember the 2nd one where they're in the spanish town of lost children.

yeah, that is The Subtle Knife. It is, in my oppinion, the best book of the 3. Maybe that is why you remember it?

This is amazing.

Have you considered perhaps an interpretation of the novels in this style?....Please?

I just finished The Subtle Knife but I've decided to take a bit of a break before reading The Amber Spyglass.

Did you see the movie version of The Golden Compass yet? What did you think? Personally I thought it was okay even though it deviated a fair bit from the book. For me, it was just weird because it was very different from what I imagined things would look like based on reading the book.

You should draw more His Dark Materials art. :3

The movie was what inspired me to read the books, since i thought it was interesting. It seemed to kind of move at a breakneck pace. After reading the book I am not really sure why they changed the order of things around so much - let alone lopping off the entire ending. I guess that way if they don;t make the later two books they have a more soild ending for the movie.

More Dark Materials art? i just posted some. :(

I rushed to finish reading the book first. I think I finished it less than a day before seeing the movie. I usually don't like to leave it that close together but I think it worked out okay. The movie did go at a breakneck pace and they eliminated most of the really violent stuff except for the outcome of the polar bear fight (I wanted to stand up and cheer when I saw that.) I guess they were trying to simplify things by changing the order around all Lord of the Rings-style. That, and using blatant exposition in places - like people saying stuff to Lyra for no particular reason except to set up things for later in the story. As for leaving that last chapter or so out of the movie, well maybe they wanted it to end on a more positive note. But it does sort of mess up the cliffhanger to The Subtle Knife. Hmmm.. Speaking of which, I wonder how they will show how Will becomes the bearer of the knife and still have the PG rating. In reading the books so far, I was quite surprised at how violent the stories are considering that they are for younger readers. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm glad that he doesn't pull any punches. I'm just surprised, s'all. These were only written in the late 90's so maybe things have changed since the books I read when I was 11 or 12.

No joke! They are pretty violent and there is quite a bit of cruelty in them - I am not sure which book it was in, and since you have not read The Amber Spyglass yet I will play it safe not to spoil anything but there is a scene with Iorek that there is no possible way would ever make it into a movie.
But jeeze, the ending of the first book alone is pretty dark.

I really hope they don't wimp out on the next two, if they do get made. Such interesting books.

Go finish The Amber Spyglass!
